Elderberry Extract Might Reduce Symptoms of Flu and Colds, But More Research is Needed to Be Certain of the Benefit

Elderberry extract may help alleviate flu and cold symptoms, though more research needs to be completed in order to be certain of its efficacy.

Sambucol (Sambucus nigra) syrup may help soothe flu symptoms, but there’s not enough reliable information about other brands or products available on the market. Elderberry products should be avoided if you suffer from multiple sclerosis or lupus as they could increase immune system activity and potentially worsen symptoms.

Plant Based Elderberry Immune Syrup

Elderberries contain many essential nutrients that support the body’s immune system in addition to antiviral properties. Vitamin C is an antioxident that works to neutralize free radicals and support healthy skin. Flavonoids have also been proven to reduce inflammation. And last but not least, elderberries provide ample phenolic acids such as quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin which act as natural pain relievers and may prevent heart disease.

Studies suggest that elderberry syrup may significantly reduce the duration and severity of colds, flu symptoms and respiratory infections when taken within 48 hours of experiencing symptoms. This may be because elderberries contain anti-inflammatory compounds which may help relieve headaches or fever, plus their potent antihistamine properties make them an excellent natural decongestant.

Important to keep in mind is that all parts of the plant – its branches, twigs, roots and seeds – contain toxic amounts of glycoside. Furthermore, pregnant women should steer clear as it may have mild diuretic properties and cause nausea and vomiting in large doses. Also those allergic to grass pollen should avoid it as this herb could trigger reactions in some individuals who are sensitive to it.

Most naturopathic doctors advise taking elderberry in either syrup form or supplement form to strengthen one’s immune system and help avoid viral infections during winter and spring, especially through snowbirding. They do point out, however, that elderberry shouldn’t be seen as an instant fix and doesn’t replace getting adequate rest, managing stress effectively, exercising regularly and eating healthily.

Elderberry syrups and gummies available on the market may also not be advised for use during COVID-19 due to concerns that they may trigger a “cytokine storm,” in which an immune response releases excessive proteins that lead to an overreaction from body systems, potentially dangerously overburdening an individual with compromised immunity.

One tablespoon of syrup daily can certainly boost immunity; however, for best results it should be taken alongside other healthy practices and as part of an overall wellness routine that also includes sleeping well or taking zinc or vitamin D3 supplements. Furthermore, since elderberry supplements are minimally regulated by the FDA and those concerned about potential adverse side effects should check with their healthcare provider before trying them.

Honey Gardens Elderberry Syrup with Propolis

Elderberries have long been used in folk traditions as an effective remedy against colds and flu, as well as supporting our immune systems. Packed with antioxidant pigments thought to boost immunity while simultaneously stopping flu viruses from reproducing within us and decreasing inflammation as well as risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, elderberries can provide essential support.

These benefits may be attributable to the plant’s high concentration of polyphenol flavonoids and phenolic acids – powerful antioxidants which protect against oxidative stress caused by pollution, unhealthy foods or stress. Polyphenols also assist cells in repairing damage that has occurred as a result of such stressors as pollution or stress-induced harm to cells.

Studies have demonstrated that elderberry extract consumption can significantly shorten the duration of common colds, influenza, and upper respiratory infections – it may even help prevent them. Furthermore, quercetin – an active component found in elderberries – may provide relief for chronic lung conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

One study found that taking Sambucol, a standardized elderberry extract, reduced both duration and severity of colds for those taking it regularly. Another research project discovered a lozenge with elderberry and vitamin C helped ease flu symptoms such as fever, congestion, coughing and sore throat. Elderberry has been proven to kill H1N1 flu viruses in lab tests; however researchers do not yet know whether or not its antiviral properties work against human strains of this virus.

Elderberry can boost immune health in several ways, from drinking syrup or taking supplements containing the fruit to taking honey gardens’ unique product featuring their time-honored recipe of raw honey, propolis and organic echinacea for natural immunity support. Their unprocessed syrup boasts high vitamin C levels – perfect for adults as well as kids alike, while its fruity flavors will appeal to kids!

Parents looking to keep their kids healthy during cold and flu season will find this product both convenient and cost-effective. It contains the highest concentration of lab-tested Sambucus elderberry extract as well as echinacea, quercetin, vitamin C, and zinc; plus it’s free from artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives!

These vegan and gluten-free gummies feature a sweet, fruity flavor that children will adore, made with non-GMO ingredients that don’t include animal gelatin. In addition, they’re an excellent source of vitamin C essential for strong immune systems as well as omega-3 fatty acids which have been known to support heart health.
